From chaos to calm

Learn the art of paediatric massage

Why massage?

As a gentle, uninvasive practice, massage has been used throughout history to encourage health, relieve stress and reduce pain.

As infants cannot tell us what is ailing them, we have to be proactive in nurturing a bond with them, creating a safe environment and providing them with preemptive care – all of which is encompassed in massage.

Choosing natural and healthy ways to soothe your children is one of the best gifts you can give them, and yourself.

How massage helps your child

The way we respond to human touch begins at birth and continues into adulthood. Evidence shows that human touch helps to regulate sleep and digestion while also improving the immune system. Touch encourages the brain to release a feel good hormone called oxytocin thus increasing emotional and social bonds while decreasing anxiety and fear.

Relaxed Rascals encourages parents, close caregivers and expectant parents to explore the art of infant and child massage. Our classes and private coaching will teach you the skills to independently provide massages to your child. Massage benefits the child physically and emotionally and is inclusive to every child, with strong benefits for children with autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome.

Massage and Neurodiversity

Massage therapy benefits children with neurodiverse conditions like autism or ADHD by providing a calming sensory experience. The gentle touch helps these children become more aware of their bodies, improving self-regulation. Massage has been shown to reduce anxiety, enhance focus, and improve sleep for neurodiverse children. It also builds trust between the child and their caregiver. Overall, massage is a valuable therapy that supports the well-being and sensory integration of children with neurodiverse conditions.

Massage and Down syndrome

Massage is great for children with Down syndrome. It helps with muscle tension, and the gentle touch improves blood flow and is supportive to muscle development. It’s great for dealing with sensory issues—they might be super sensitive or not sensitive enough to touch, and massage can help find a balance.

How massage helps you

Research evidence indicates that mothers with postpartum depression and those who are finding parenthood difficult greatly benefit from infant massage as it deepens their bond and improves their levels of dopamine, serotonin, endorphins and oxytocin – the four happy hormones.

Closeness, touch and knowing your abilities increases your worth, and assists in developing  positive parenting relationships.

Maternal health and infant massage

Massaging a child can be a meditative and calming experience for a Mum, creating a soothing environment that may alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. The routine of parent-child massage not only provides a dedicated time for positive interaction but also reinforces a secure attachment, which has been linked to improved maternal mental health outcomes. Overall, incorporating massage into the parent-child relationship can serve as a valuable tool for nurturing emotional well-being and enhancing the overall mental health of mothers. This therapeutic activity fosters a deeper emotional connection.

About me

Hi, I’m Jess.

As a registered nurse with 10+ years working in hospital settings, with the majority of those years spent working in the children’s ward, I have developed a love of seeing children thrive.

Working with children and having an immense interest in natural therapies lead me down the clear pathway of infant and children’s massage.

Raising my three children has enabled me to observe first hand the benefits of infant, preschooler and preteen massage.

I have developed a real passion for infant and children’s massage and thoroughly enjoy coaching parents and close caregivers on the art of massage. Enabling them to then achieve positive effects by independently massaging their own children.

I am based in Rockhampton, with classes held in Rockhampton & Yeppoon.

Private coaching can be received via video calls.
